Remembering the first World Trade Center attack 22 years later
in persistent symptoms that started within the first year of the attack
The first World Trade Center attack and the first terrorist attack on America. A bomb built in nearby Jersey City is driven into an underground garage at the trade center and detonated, killing six and wounding 1,500. Yousef, nephew of Khalid Sheik Mohammed, masterminds the attack, working with nearly a dozen local Muslims. While U.S. officials disagree on whether Osama bin Laden instituted the attack and Yousef denies he has met bin Laden, the CIA later learns that Yousef stayed in a bin Laden-owned guest house in Pakistan both before and after the attacks.
Twenty years after the first World Trade Center attack, experts said the bombing marked the beginning of the end of American innocence about the threat of global terrorism.
First World Trade Center Attack 1993
The 1993 World Trade Center bombing was a ..
While largely unknown by U.S. intelligence two decades ago, Al Qaeda’s efforts to attack Americans both on U.S. soil and abroad were increasing. Months after the first World Trade Center attack, in October 1993, Al Qaeda helped Somali warlords attack the U.S. in the “Black Hawk Down” battle. However, our government still was not focused on the terror group, and the news media never published or broadcast its name that year, even though it had been established since 1989.Osama bin Laden's organization did not wait long and was setting the next attack in motion, one that would get the world's attention. Six people were killed and hundreds injured when a truck bomb was detonated in the basement of the World Trade Center in New York city. The photos show the faces of the survivors, blackened with soot, being lead from the complex. In the pre-World Wide Web days of the early 1990s officials received nine phone calls taking credit for the first World Trade Center attack. Firefighters battled flames and clouds of smoke as a 200-by-100 foot crater was blown in the floor of the parking garage. The name Osama bin Laden was not yet headline material but soon his name would become known outside the dusty files of the C.I.A. was a congressman at the time representing the Central Coast. Robert Gates was then Director of the Central Intelligence Agency, now he is the Secretary of Defense. Leon Panetta, current CIA Director, has been nominated to replace Gates when he steps down. Hillary Clinton was then first lady elect. Barack Obama was teaching constitutional law at the University of Chicago Law School. President's Bill Clinton, George W. Bush and Barak Obama would make killing or capturing the terrorist leader an increasing priority. Terrorist attacks credited to Al Qaeda would strike four continents. Intelligence agencies all over the world made Osama bin Laden a major target but putting the pieces together was elusive years-long process and apparently in August 2000 a lead proved solid. In the end a U.S. Navy SEAL team did what trillions of dollars, the loss of thousands of military and civilian lives, two wars and the combined armed forces of NATO, Pakistan and Afghanistan could not. Kill the elusive Osama bin Laden.
